We love the idea of of Abraham Kuyper — 'There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!'
This has a certain ring to a missionary. I hear in it something like the personal policy of George Whitefield, “God forbid that I should travel with anybody a quarter of an hour without speaking of Christ to them.”
I do not see any any witness of the Holy Book where I am to compartmentalize my service to Christ. We so often see where others turn it on and turn it off. And soon it remains mostly off. We cannot imagine Christ being around any person in need, whether in soul or body, and he does not minister (serve) to them. We will drill down more in those these areas of evangelism and discipleship. I think you will notice immediately that we view these holy things quiet differently than the normal Christian ministry. We will talk about each in a dedicated area.
And then we will talk about global and local ministry also. The Lord has graciously blessed us with a great deal of success in overseas missions. And we look for him to bless us, and you, by means of ministry right where we live. The Scriptures says. “So then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of [our great] God.” And the Westminster Catechism says, “The chief purpose of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.” May I suggest that most of us are living for and glorifying something else for the most part. We intend to see a lot more God glorifying and God enjoyment going on among believers. Christ Jesus is worthy of all our praise and honor and glory. He is more than worthy. If we draw near to him we will find that he is the most glorious and enjoyable person of all. Let’s begin doing that.
Jesus Christ is the most wonderful person of all. No one loves like Jesus, No one cares for you and your needs like Jesus. No one offers you unlimited love and benevolence as he does. Leading people to decide to become more like him should be the easiest sell on earth. But it is not. We have to wade through a lot of misconceptions and hardened ways to bring people, Christians btw, to commit wholly to him.
We have worked with literally hundreds of pastors and churches. Thank God we have been able to work and serve shoulder to shoulder with many of them in the mission field. We have been able to train many churches in these areas we focus in. It should be self evident to most that this practice that was one of the key practices of the Lord Jesus and the apostles, yet it is is largely Missing In Action today.
One of the reasons discipleship is MIA today is that it has been made over into this stilted, unnatural thing. It is not. For any person who has the life of Jesus Christ living in them, sharing this life with its present and eternal blessings should be the most natural thing in the world. Don’t let the world around us dictate to us what the gospel is and is not.
What discipleship is has been recorded for us in Romans. We will talk more about the many places in the New Testament that teach that our ultimate purpose in live is to be conformed to the image of Christ. That being the Biblical truth of discipleship means that teaching it leads us to the need to teach every aspect of this high ideal of Christian maturity. True discipleship is a glory to the person and work of Jesus Christ. We are depriving Christ of the honor he is due when we fail to properly disciple new believers. Let’s be intentional about correcting this negligence. You will find a directory of topics on the Discipleship section of this website. Begin your own glorious story and experience of fully following Jesus today.
I believe you are here because you have “tasted and seen that the Lord is good.” There is no one like him. No one has the glory, the story, the grace, the love and the power to make your life and your dream meaningful in the way God created it and you to be. The next couple of things I will mention regarding evangelism should be self evident to all Western believers. Carey Nieuwhof, ministry consultant, says that evangelism in our churches is on life support. Chuck Lawless, former Chair of the Billy Graham School of Evangelism, says, “Evangelicals today have evangelism aversion.” To which I respond, “Can they really be called Evangelicals then?”
Once again I will stake this Holy Spirit proven claim, that for anyone whom the Spirit of Christ indwells, that sharing that life and that faith would be the most natural things in the world. That is, unless you have been trained to be fearful about it. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the best news that any person can hear. That person is anyone’s dearest friend who shares Christ Jesus with them. There is a lot of re-education to do in this area. And I am glad to do it. I am pumped to help lead the church of Jesus Christ back into possession of two of the greatest aspects of the Best News Ever. You will find various aspects of the defense of the gospel, training for evangelism and “tearing down strongholds” that Satan has “fortified” in our minds, according to 2 Corinthians 10 and its description of what real spiritual warfare is. Evangelism is also a key component of our local ministries. Even here in the Bible Belt we believe only 17% of the population are born again believers. The mission field is here, friends. But why have we lost the urgency?
This subject is going to have a major part to play in this website. That is because this subject plays a HUGE role in the end times we are living in. This subject plays a huge role in end times prophecy- perhaps something you have missed.
“This good news of the kingdom [the gospel] will be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end [of the age] will come.” Matthew 24:14
Are you awaiting the return of Christ? There is an eternal crown for “All who love His appearing.” There are many other scriptures to talk about Christ priority on reaching all people. Again, it is an area where the church seemingly has fallen asleep at the wheel. Consider: Less than 1% of global missions funds goes to reach the unreached. Less than 3% of all missionaries go to them- most that do are indigenous workers. Unreached people are those in locations where there are no churches, no Bibles, and no believing neighbors that can share Jesus with them. These areas are known for being very distant culturally, linguistically and geographically. They are often marked by political oppression and persecution of Christians. These are all reasons why they are yet unreached. You will find a section on this website about the Unreached, reaching them, as well as global missions.
You can see my next page where I Biblically and spiritually show how evangelism, discipleship and missions are the necessary catalysts for the 2nd Coming of Christ.
Prayer is the last topic that will have its own sections, at least for now. No one who is open and honest can look at Christ’s teachings on prayer and not think what we have today is something completely different. I will post some powerful, classic works on prayer. Andrew Murray said that most people cannot read the words of Christ on prayer without rationalizing them down until they mean almost nothing. It is clear from His teachings that Christ intended that prayer should be answered. This is our first work. Oswald Chambers said we say a quick prayer to get to the work- but prayer is the real work. Yet is most neglected today,
Every believer I talk to notes how we desperately need a revival, another Great Awakening. History tells us that NONE of them have ever started with great prayer. This begs the question, “How much do we truly desire revival?” I will share some great things that will truly encourage you in cranking up your own “prayer life”. We cannot do so without a firm understanding of the grace of God. If we are depending upon self for any aspect of our standing before God we will shrink from His presence. “Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].” Hebrews 4:16 Amp
Last thoughts: The Christian life is one life, it is a truly integrate living with God. This means for us that evangelism, discipleship, missions and prayer are all inextricably interwoven. At times it will be difficult to grasp where one ends and the other starts. Though we will see that prayer flows through all of them. We should note that Christ’s entire life was a prayer. Grasping that we can begin to see how it gives life to all the rest.
Every Neighbor, Every Nation depends on the generous gifts of our missions and ministry partners like you. Please prayerfully consider how you can help us continue Christ’s mission to the world. And make sure you read our next page about missions, evangelism, discipleship and the return of Christ. They are inextricably connected in ways you may not have considered.
We know that Christ is passionate about reaching the lost. Has our Christian culture recoiled from the culture because they are increasingly wicked and increasingly hostile to us and to the gospel? Friend, this should not be! Do we really think that Christ only wants us to share the gospel to people who are nice to us?
We also know that God is very serious about every believer in Jesus being conformed to His image. Galations 4:19. Ephesians 4:13 and many other scriptures tell us that God’s eternal purpose is that each of us will be conformed to the image of Christ. Nothing short of that must be our goal. Are we to be known as a generation of low bar setters? Listen to me saints, our feelings, our fears and doubts, and our experience are not the final word for us. The final word for us will be the thoughts of God toward us. Our prayer is that every believer will turn from naturalistic thinking, faithless thinking, worldly thinking and once again embrace God’s dream for us.
The first few articles and lessons on here will be about tying these 4 categories together. And tying them together is faithful ways that perhaps you have forgotten or have not considered. You will see how prayer, evangelism, discipleship and reaching the unreached are intricately and spiritually connected in ways the church is not teaching today. I believe you will find it powerful and compelling. Our prayer as these pages will be used of God, Him guiding our hearts and words, to bring us all to where we can “be presented before Him at his coming, “without spot, wrinkle, blemish or any such thing.” And then we can embrace Him without any sense of guilt, condemnation or sense of inferiority in His presence- all because of His Amazing Grace.
James is a career missionary who began serving as a Wycliffe Bible Translator for West Africa. It was there that James worked with Elisabeth Elliott, Kenneth Pike, Marilyn Lazlo and many others. In 2018 James joined East West Ministries due to his friendship with founder John Maisel. There he strategized and led teams to the spiritually darkest places on earth. He also was blessed to have served as the Director of Prayer for this global missions agency.
James is now a missionary and seminary professor who equips the least equipped pastors, leaders and missionaries globally. Kristi is the very height of God’s calling for a helpmate. And wherever she goes she makes James look good.
